Auckland Regional Branch

2010 is a big year for the Auckland Regional branch. We have the birth of ‘Super City' and as a branch we are connecting with the Sector to have a voice through this process ensuring the Youth Sector is heard. http://www.legislation.govt.nz/bill/government/2009/0112/latest/DLM2635001.html?search=ts_bill_Auckland_resel&p=1&sr=1

Don't forget to register your event for Youth Week 22nd - 30th May on www.youthweek.co.nz, this will ensure maximum exposure to youth, with over 3000 hits a day plus go in the draw to win a celebrity at your event.

And of course we are hosting ‘INVOLVE Connect - Together we are stronger' in November and a number of our committee are involved in the planning of this.  Along with these two large projects we are also going to focus on training and qualifications for the Youth Sector in 2010.

We look forward to working and meeting with you in 2010!

COMMUNITY SERVICES - TRANSITION UPDATE MARCH 2010

An update from the Auckland Transition Agency

Community groups are interested - and in some cases concerned - about the impact the new Auckland Council could have on their current relationships with local government, as well as their funding.

The relationship the new council has with community groups and the interests they represent will be pivotal to the success of the new council, and its ability to contribute to the vibrant communities that make up Auckland.

Until the new Council is formed on 1 November 2010, there will be no change to existing relationships that are mandated by your local council.

Councils are currently preparing to transition existing organisational relationships and resources through to the new council. While current councils can't provide guarantees, there is no reason to believe that existing relationships won't be maintained by the new council, but possibly in a different shape and form.

Councils will be considering the community and not-for-profit groups that have met the terms and conditions of their relationship and will be recommending that both regular non-contestable funding and contracts for service are extended to 30 June 2012.  For annual contestable funding rounds, we expect that funding schemes will continue to be available, although there may be changes to application and disbursement dates to ensure a smooth transition to the Auckland Council. After 1 November 2010 there could be changes to decision making bodies, boundaries, timetables and dates for future funding rounds.

If community groups would like more information, they should contact the person they usually contact at their local council.

Opportunities for Young People

Spirit of Adventure

The Spirit of Adventure Trust was established in 1972 by Lou Fisher and is dedicated to the youth of New Zealand. It offers teenagers, the unique opportunity to sail around the Hauraki Gulf on the icon tall ship, Spirit of New Zealand, providing a leadership development programme.

10-Day Youth Development Voyage

The 10-Day Youth Development Voyage takes onboard 40 trainees (15-18 years), with an equal mix of females and males, all total strangers.   The value of teamwork becomes very apparent, as does resilience, teambuilding skills, co-operation, communication, confidence, tolerance, and leadership.  Each year 1,200 trainees from throughout the country participate in the programme.

During their voyage trainees are presented with a number of diverse opportunities and activities that ensure they learn a great deal about themselves and develop as individuals.

Friendship, fun and laughter run high, as trainees complete the many characteristics of the programme - tramping trips ashore, learning to sail the luggers, beach cleaning (supporting environmental education and sustainability), hoisting and setting the very large and heavy sails, climbing the ratlines to loosen or stow sails 30 metres above the deck, not to forget the dawn swim.  The horseshoe-shaped amphitheatre at the stern holds evening activities such as public speaking, presentations, debates, movies and games.

Skills learnt during the voyage prepare trainees for Trainee Day - the final day when they elect their own crew and are given complete control of the ship and are responsible for getting her back to base.
