Auckland Regional Branch
2010 is a big year for the Auckland Regional branch. We have the birth of ‘Super City' and as a branch we are connecting with the Sector to have a voice through this process ensuring the Youth Sector is heard. The Local Government (Auckland Law Reform) Bill (3rd Bill) has been released and open for submissions. This is some light reading over the Christmas Break and later in January we will release a summary of key points that pertain to the youth sector and a draft submission prepared on behalf of our Auckland Members will be emailed out to members for their use as a template. Submissions close on 12/02/2010. For more information check out the web link http://www.legislation.govt.nz/bill/government/2009/0112/latest/DLM2635001.html?search=ts_bill_Auckland_resel&p=1&sr=1
And of course we are hosting ‘INVOLVE Connect - Together we are stronger' in November and a number of our committee are involved in the planning of this. Along with these two large projects we are also going to focus on training and qualifications for the Youth Sector in 2010.
We look forward to working and meeting with you in 2010!

Opportunities for Young People
Spirit of Adventure
The Spirit of Adventure Trust was established in 1972 by Lou Fisher and is dedicated to the youth of New Zealand. It offers teenagers, the unique opportunity to sail around the Hauraki Gulf on the icon tall ship, Spirit of New Zealand, providing a leadership development programme.
10-Day Youth Development Voyage
The 10-Day Youth Development Voyage takes onboard 40 trainees (15-18 years), with an equal mix of females and males, all total strangers. The value of teamwork becomes very apparent, as does resilience, teambuilding skills, co-operation, communication, confidence, tolerance, and leadership. Each year 1,200 trainees from throughout the country participate in the programme.
During their voyage trainees are presented with a number of diverse opportunities and activities that ensure they learn a great deal about themselves and develop as individuals.
Friendship, fun and laughter run high, as trainees complete the many characteristics of the programme - tramping trips ashore, learning to sail the luggers, beach cleaning (supporting environmental education and sustainability), hoisting and setting the very large and heavy sails, climbing the ratlines to loosen or stow sails 30 metres above the deck, not to forget the dawn swim. The horseshoe-shaped amphitheatre at the stern holds evening activities such as public speaking, presentations, debates, movies and games.
Skills learnt during the voyage prepare trainees for Trainee Day - the final day when they elect their own crew and are given complete control of the ship and are responsible for getting her back to base.

YWCA Mentors - Auckland
Would you like to make a difference? Be more involved with your community? Have you ever thought about mentoring?
Mentors are ordinary everyday women who have a positive influence on high-school aged young women doing everyday things.
If you live in South Auckland and care about the future of New Zealand's young women you may have what it takes to become an inspiration, a role model, and a friend to one of these young students.
To become a mentor we will provide you the skills, all you need is to be committed to weekly texts or phone calls, monthly face to face catch ups, and an overall minimum 2 year commitment.
The YWCA Future Leaders Programme is a free mentoring programme that changes the lives of young women aged 14-18 years and possibly yours.
Currently mentors are being recruited for the Future Leaders programme at McAuley High School (Otahuhu) and Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate (Otara). The next mentor training day will be held on Saturday 13th March 2010.
