A one stop shop is a community-based centre, which provides services to young people. These services include recreational activities, health care and social care.
Access to school based health care varies widely in New Zealand. Legally schools are only required to employ a first aider to deal with incidents and injury. The provision of higher quality services depends on the philosophy of the board of trustees and the principal, funding, and the degree to which they acknowledge that health impacts on academic outcomes. It can also depend on District Health Board or Public Health Organisation support. In the 2008 Budget the Government announced funding to role out health services to decile 1-3 schools over three years starting in 2009.
Most young people access health services through a general practioner (G.P.). G.P's have a special role to play in supporting young people's access and reassuring them about confidentiality. Confidentiality is a key concern for young people when visiting the doctor.
Specialist services
There are a wide range of specialist youth health services. The best place for information is your local doctor or services provided by your local District Health Board.
