Access to school based health care varies widely in New Zealand. Legally schools are only required to employ a first aider to deal with incidents and injury. Though improvements are now being made.
A phased implementation for supporting existing and establishing new services is planned – starting in 2008/09 with Teen Parent Units, Alternative Education and decile 1 secondary schools. Support will then be extended to decile 2 secondary schools in 2009/10 and decile 3 secondary schools in 2010/11. The Government has allocated $17.2 million to this initiative over the next four years. The Ministry and DHBs will work with schools, Teen Parent Units and Alternative Education providers to discuss health services relevant to meet the needs of their students.
